What a deck really costs in 2026
Price per square foot by material, plus the extras that move the number: height, stairs, railing and a pergola.

Per square foot prices are a good start, but height and railing move the total more than people expect.
Base price by material
Pressure treated $25 to $35, cedar $35 to $50, composite $45 to $65, PVC $55 to $75 and hardwood $60 to $85 per sq ft, built.
What adds the most
A raised deck needs taller posts, bracing and stairs. Railing is priced per foot and runs on every open edge. A pergola adds $6,500 or more.
